Our Choir
The choir's "joyful noise" at Scarborough
is based in the spirit of its voluntary membership, several of whom have
sung for more than 20 years in our loft and in the chancel (above and in
front of the congregation). The choir is an essential part of the dialogue
between God and the congregation that is worship-- their voices evoke
prayer, especially as they descend from the loft with the organ during our
partly sung communion service. The choir's own dialogue with our music
director is most evident when they sing from the front of the
church. There is a joyous collaboration and much new experimentation.
Both choir and congregation benefit from the acoustics, sound system,
and great instruments. Among the most beautiful services are the Christmas
eve pageant and midnight services, and the Tenebrae service on Maundy
Thursday. These and Choir Sunday are particularly choir-led worship
services. Soloists are frequently featured, and depended upon more in the
summer months when the choir as a whole takes time off, only to resume after
a picnic in September.

Our singing is also enhanced by the fact that members of the
congregation in and outside the choir sing in other groups as well, such as
the Choral Arts Society (which rehearses every Thursday in Fellowship Hall),
the Westchester Women's Chorale, the Hudson Bells, Sine Nomine, and the Collegium Westchester. A
special pleasure is found in the concerts of the International Concert
Alliance, which brings in world class musicians four times per year.
Please try a rehearsal or two, and consider whether singing is one of
your gifts-- to yourself and to the congregation.
Choir rehearsals are Sundays at 9:15 am prior to service.
Our Organ and Piano
Custom built by the Odell Company of Yonkers soon after the
church itself, the organ has been expanded to include both more range in
pipes and more electronics for combination action. We are particularly
grateful for the design improvements put in by Stanton Daughtery, who
continues to maintain the organ and tune it.
Our Piano is a Samick piano, purchased from Piano, Piano in 2000 with
the congregation supplementing a major gift from Claire and Ed Payne. Claire
chaired a kind of search committee for the instrument, assisted by Mr. Dan
Wen Wei of the International Concert Alliance. Benefit concerts have been
played by Hui Mei Lin (Frost) and Camille Budarz.
